On a recent trip, I looked out my window to see another plane slightly above us going in a perpendicular direction. While watching an episode of Aircrash Investigations, I heard one "expert" say that (generally) aircraft are supposed to stay about 5 miles apart. As you can see from my photos, that wasn't the case.

After doing some quick searching I see now that planes are allowed to get much closer than what my expert told me.
